The Parents

At Mini Dachshund Home, we believe that exceptional puppies begin with exceptional parents. Every Dachshund puppy we raise is a direct reflection of the love, care, planning, and integrity we put into selecting and raising our adult dogs. This page is designed to give you full transparency and detailed insight into the moms and dads behind our precious miniature Dachshund puppies. We don’t just breed dogs—we preserve, protect, and promote the breed we love.

Health History & Genetic Testing

We are committed to the long-term health of every puppy, which starts with their parents. All of our breeding dogs are:

  • Fully vet-checked and approved for breeding
  • Screened for hereditary conditions, including:
    • IVDD (Intervertebral Disc Disease) – a spine condition common in long-bodied breeds
    • PRA (Progressive Retinal Atrophy) – a genetic cause of vision loss
    • DM (Degenerative Myelopathy) – a spinal cord disease
    • Patellar Luxation and heart irregularities
  • We use modern DNA testing panels through reputable labs (such as Embark, Paw Print Genetics, or Wisdom Panel) to confirm that our breeding pairs are either clear of these conditions or properly matched to avoid producing affected puppies.

This proactive approach gives our puppy families peace of mind, knowing their pup comes from healthy roots.

💖 Temperament of the Parents

We carefully select our breeding dogs not only for physical traits but for outstanding temperament. Our parent dogs are:

  • Gentle and affectionate
  • Smart and responsive to training
  • Loyal to their humans
  • Confident, not timid or fearful We live with our dogs every day and know their personalities inside and out. We make sure to breed parents who are emotionally stable and well-socialized, so their puppies inherit the same balanced disposition. Our goal is to produce puppies that grow into wonderful companions, not just cute faces.

📏 Size & Weight

We specialize in true miniature Dachshunds. Each of our adult dogs falls within the breed’s miniature classification:

  • Adult Weight: Between 8–12 lbs
  • Height at the shoulder: 5–7 inches

We do not breed oversized “tweenie” Dachshunds or toy-sized variants. Knowing the exact size of the parents gives you a reliable guide to how big (or small) your puppy will likely grow.

🧼 Coat Type and Grooming Needs

We raise smooth-coated, long-haired, and on occasion, wire-haired miniature Dachshunds. Each coat type brings its own unique charm:

  • Smooth-coated parents produce sleek, low-maintenance puppies
  • Long-haired parents create soft, elegant puppies who need gentle brushing
  • Wire-haired lines offer a charming, scruffy look and a spirited personality

We always inform our buyers of the coat type of both parents and what to expect from the litter. Proper coat pairing ensures puppies are not only beautiful but healthy and easy to care for

🩺 Vaccination & Vet Care History

Every one of our adult dogs is:

  • Fully vaccinated
  • Dewormed on a rotating schedule
  • Given heartworm prevention
  • Routinely examined by our trusted vet
  • Monitored for dental health, skin care, and mobility

We keep detailed health records and partner with a licensed veterinarian to ensure the highest standard of care.

🎨 Color and Pattern

Our breeding program includes ethically bred coat colors and patterns, always prioritizing health over hype. Our parent dogs come in a variety of AKC-recognized colors, including:

  • Black & tan
  • Red (shaded and clear)
  • Chocolate
  • Isabella (fawn)
  • Cream
  • Dapple and Piebald patterns

We avoid breeding double dapples or any genetically risky pairings. Every color combination we breed is intentional, educated, and health-conscious.

🧬 Pedigree / Bloodline

Our parent dogs are handpicked from exceptional bloodlines, with many descending from champion show lines or long-standing, reputable breeders. We maintain multi-generation pedigrees for each of our adult dogs and take pride in upholding the physical and behavioral standards of the breed. This legacy of responsible breeding is reflected in the consistency, beauty, and quality of our puppies.

🏅 AKC or Registry Status

All of our parent dogs are registered with the AKC (American Kennel Club) or equivalent reputable registries. Registration confirms their:

  • Purebred status
  • Verified lineage
  • Eligibility for AKC programs (optional)

For buyers who value papers, we’re happy to discuss full or limited registration options depending on your puppy’s purpose (pet, show, or breeding).

👶 Breeding History

We follow strict ethical breeding practices:

  • We limit the number of litters per female
  • We allow our girls to fully rest and recover between litters
  • We retire all breeding dogs early and rehome them with loving families or keep them as lifelong pets We never overbreed or cut corners. We track and record every litter, and we can tell you about the puppies from past pairings, their health outcomes, and even share owner testimonials when available.

📅 Age of the Parents

Our dogs are bred at the ideal reproductive ages—generally between 1.5 and 6 years old. This ensures:

  • Peak fertility
  • Strong immune systems
  • Healthy maternal behavior We never breed females too young or past their safe breeding years. Males are also given proper breaks between pairings and are monitored closely.

🏡 Living Environment of the Parents

Our parent dogs are raised in our home, not in a kennel. They sleep indoors, cuddle on the couch, and play in our secure yard. This gives them:

  • Emotional security
  • Healthy physical development
  • Exposure to household sounds and routines They are part of our daily life and that comfort and stability is passed on to their puppies.

🧒 Socialization and Behavior with People/Pets

From a young age, our adult dogs are exposed to:

  • Children
  • Other dogs
  • Visitors and strangers
  • Car rides, bath time, and vet visits

This results in confident, adaptable adults who raise well-adjusted puppies. We do not breed shy, anxious, or reactive dogs.
